| We would like to bring to
your attention the fact that an increasing number
of empty containers are being reported as stolen
from importers premises. In some
instances empty containers have been removed from
unsecured yards at night by swinglift trucks. In
other cases containers have been picked up during
normal working hours when yard personnel have not
properly checked the identity or drivers and/or
trucking companies.
The
affected importers think that the empty
containers have been de hired to the shipping
line depots and only find out weeks later that
the containers have been stolen making it
virtually impossible to trace those responsible.
The
shipping companies and freight forwarders are
holding the consignee, as stated on the bill of
lading, liable for the cost of the container and
we would therefore encourage all clients to
ensure that they have an adequate recording and
security practise in place.
